The goalkeeping position at Manchester United has been a major conundrum for Ruben Amorim ever since he took charge, one that hopefully has now been solved following the deadline-day deal.

Andre Onana has been culpable for mistakes in the Premier League and in Europe, and his latest transgression came in the EFL Cup as his mistakes saw League Two side Grimsby Town claim victory against the Red Devils.

As a result, the head coach decided to start the new season with Altay Bayindir in goal, and the Turkiye international’s performances have also been nothing to write home about.

This is why INEOS decided to bring in Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp, but currently, the 20-time English league champions have four senior goalkeepers in the squad.

Onana Saudi route remains open

And Amorim is keen to get rid of both Onana and Bayindir, and as per Teamtalk, despite the summer transfer window closing for Europe, the Saudi Pro League window remains open until September 10.

And INEOS remain in discussions with SPL clubs in order to offload the Cameroonian, who is eyeing a new lucrative deal, something Saudi clubs should have no issue with providing.

Onana surprised the club by demanding a new contract despite his woeful form, and INEOS are right to get rid of him as soon as possible.

“Manchester United are more than willing to part ways with Andre Onana, with sources confirming discussions with the Saudi Pro League as a potential destination are genuine and the single factor that could convince the goalkeeper to make the move now coming to light.

“The Saudi Pro League, increasingly seen as a viable market for European clubs looking to move on high-profile players, has emerged as a serious option for the 29-year-old.

Financial details

“After United failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League last season, Onana’s salary was reduced by 25 per cent, a clause tied to the club’s European performance. Onana‘s situation at Old Trafford has been further complicated by financial and strategic developments.

“Seeking to secure his financial future, Onana has pushed for a new contract. However, new head coach Ruben Amorim has informed the goalkeeper that the club is heading in a different direction, giving him the green light to explore opportunities elsewhere.”

NEOM SC were among the sides linked with a move, while Al-Qadsiyah, Al-Ittihad, and Al-Hilal are all reportedly keen on Andre Onana.

Whether a move materialises will be interesting to see. And fans will be hoping Lammens can start strong given Ruben Amorim’s need for positive results.
