Andre Onana spoke after a man of the match display with Ruben Amorim in charge for the first-time, but Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town on Sunday.

Honest as ever, the Cameroon international tends to take responsibility for speaking to reporters after games, despite only being at the club for over a year.

It’s reassuring because that is what you want in a goalkeeper. Someone willing to stand up, accept mistakes and help raise standards.

Onana pulled off a series of incredible saves at Portman Road and refused to dwell on the draw with Ipswich, instead choosing to look ahead to the future under new head coach Ruben Amorim.

The Reds took the lead after two points through Marcus Rashford but were unable to secure all three points in Amorim’s first game in charge, being pegged back by a deflected goal from Omari Hutchinson.

It made for a disappointing start to Amorim’s reign because United were expected to win, but it’s important to look forward, as Onana alluded to in his post-match interview.

Onana denied Liam Delap from close range prior to Hutchinson’s equaliser before the interval and prevented the striker again in the second half with another instinctive stop.

“We are at such a big club so there is no time to cry,” Onana told MUTV, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News. “We have to move on. Good games will come, better days will come.

“I always say that it will not rain forever; the sun will shine. We know that it is just a matter of time.

“We have to continue working hard, pushing ourselves, stay together and stay positive because there are still a lot of games to go, competitions where we can fight. We are all excited and very positive about this season.”

Right now, Amorim is at the early stages of learning about his new team. The coming weeks will tell a lot about which players he can trust when United need to work for a result.

Onana gave a brilliant account of himself against Ipswich and was unlucky that Hutchinson’s shot into the net took a deflection off Noussair Mazraoui. Otherwise, I’m convinced Onana would have kept another clean sheet.

When asked about his individual performance, Onana didn’t want to take any credit because United didn’t take all three points. He urged his players to continue working hard and results will improve.

“It was not enough [his saves] to win the game. I think we have to continue working hard. I will always take responsibility.

“Of course, I am happy with these saves but the most important thing is the victory of the team; when you don’t win it is difficult. We have to move on, take responsibility and move on and be very positive.”
