The performance against League Two side Grimsby Town proved to be the final straw for Ruben Amorim, as he ruthlessly cast Andre Onana aside soon after.

The Cameroonian has agreed on a loan move to Trabzonspor, after Manchester United brought in Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp on deadline day.

Onana was initially promised the No.1 spot, as per i Paper, which is why the former Inter Milan shot-stopper had turned down moves to Monaco as well as several Saudi Pro League sides.

However, the EFL Cup disaster led to a rethink at the club, and it was decided that the Cameroon international was best served playing somewhere else.

Initial assurance

“Trabzonspor-bound Andre Onana is understood to have turned down offers from other clubs after being told that he would be Manchester United’s No 1 goalkeeper before the season started.

“Onana had offers from elsewhere and in fact turned down the chance to move to Monaco as he was under the impression he was at the forefront of coach Ruben Amorim’s plans.

“United had coveted a new goalkeeper from the start of the summer window, but it was understood that any new arrival would come in only to compete for a starting spot with Onana.

“However, errors from both Onana and Altay Bayindir already this season have caused a rethink among senior figures at the club, with Senne Lammens signed from Royal Antwerp, hastening Onana’s exit.”

Transfer U-turn

Sir Jim Ratcliffe supported the decision to let the 29-year-old leave, which had caught the ex-Ajax ace by surprise initially.

Andre Onana had returned from holiday with an injury, which had not impressed the head coach, nor did the player’s demands for a new and improved contract.

The Erik ten Hag signing has proven to be a disaster, with high-profile mistakes committed both in the Premier League and in Europe.

Even if he does shine out in Turkiye, INEOS have no plans of reintegrating him back into the squad. The hope is he performs well and regains some of his previous form, so that he can be sold to the highest bidder next summer.
