The federation announced that sporting director Andreas Rettig will leave his role when his contract expires at year end, after opting against an extension.

Rettig informed the DFB’s shareholder representatives and supervisory board at a meeting on Thursday, explaining he would not pursue a new deal for personal reasons.

He had already notified president Bernd Neuendorf before the FIFA World Cup began, giving the federation time to plan for the leadership transition.

Rettig has held the post since 2023, overseeing the DFB’s sporting operations during a period of change in German football.

His exit comes amid upheaval at the DFB following Julian Nagelsmann’s resignation as Germany head coach. With both the national team vacancy and the sporting director role to be filled, the federation is preparing for a major reshuffle before the next international cycle.
