Manchester City face Chelsea in the League Cup on Wednesday night and a lot has changed since the Cityzens fell to their title rivals on the opening day of the WSL season.

Chelsea beat City in the first game of the WSL season but the league leaders haven’t lost since then.

Andree Jeglertz: “A lot has changed”

Manchester City and Chelsea have been going hammer and tongue all season and they are fighting it out for the WSL title in 2026.

Chelsea got the upper hand in the first WSL meeting between the sides this year. The Blues won the season opener 2-1 but ever since then the title race has been been all Man City.

Andree Jeglertz’ side haven’t dropped a point in the league since September and they are flying under their Swedish manager.

In his debut season Jeglertz has already picked up three manager of the month awards as City have won 14 of their 16 games in all competitions.

The WSL leaders are fully in control of the league, but the cup is another story altogether.

On Wednesday night, Chelsea will face City for the second time this season in the Subway League Cup semi final.

When asked what has changed since the first day of the WSL season, Andree Jeglertz said: “A lot of things.

“First of all the confidence that we know what we’re supposed to do, we’re clear with our relationships and the game model, we’ve been winning a lot of games, we have a great squad and know what we can expect.

“That was the first game, but we’re in a different place. There’s definitely been a big change since then.”

Wednesday’s game is definitely one of the most highly anticipated games of the season and the winner could gain all the momentum at an important point of the campaign.

Respect between managers

The League Cup semi final isn’t just a clash between two of the best teams in England, but it also sees two of the best managers in the world pit against each other.

There is clearly a lot of respect between both sides and Sonia Bompastor was quick to praise her counterpart ahead of the game.

Despite the current gulf between the teams, Jeglertz also praised Chelsea for their campaign so far.

“Chelsea are a great team and everyone is talking about them not having a good season so far but just took at the results they’ve done and how they perform,” he said.

“They’re definitely a team that’s coming with confidence to their game.”

Despite Man City dominating this year, it is still hard to call a winner for Wednesday’s League Cup clash.

The winner of this week’s semi final will face either Manchester United or Arsenal in the final in March.
