Andres Iniesta still believes Spain can win the 2026 World Cup, but the FC Barcelona legend has made one thing clear: Lamine Yamal’s influence could be decisive.
The former Barca midfielder, forever remembered for scoring Spain’s winning goal in the 2010 World Cup final, spoke during the presentation of NSN Cycling Team, a project he co-founded.
As quoted by Mundo Deportivo, Iniesta said:
“Lamine Yamal is a very important player for the national team and the future of this national team obviously also has a lot to do with how decisive Lamine Yamal can be in the matches.”
That is a major compliment from one of the most important players in Spanish football history. Iniesta knows better than most how difficult these tournaments are, and how often they are decided by moments of individual quality.
He also warned:
“These types of tournaments are very difficult and any detail can punish you a lot.”
Iniesta’s words will feel familiar. Lamine is already carrying major responsibility for club and country, not because of hype, but because his talent naturally demands the ball in the biggest moments.
Iniesta remains optimistic about Spain’s chances. He said:
“Spain for me is one of the favourites, because of the players, because of what it transmits to me. I remain very optimistic and I hope and wish that we are capable of winning the second star.”
Spain are not just Lamine, but Lamine may be the player who turns tight matches in their favour.
That is exactly why Barcelona must protect him while also enjoying him. Players like this do not appear often, and when Iniesta highlights his importance, it says plenty.
Lamine has not hit his stride quite yet at the World Cup, but there is no doubt that he will want to rise to the occasion sooner rather than later.
Spain face Austria next in the round of 32, and it remains to be seen whether the Barcelona teenager can deliver a memorable performance to help La Roja reach the next stage of the tournament.
