Brentford have signed El Hadji Malick Diouf from West Ham United, with Keith Andrews saying the 21-year-old fits the club and strengthens competition. According to Hounslow Herald, the left-back has agreed a five-year deal with a club option, the fee undisclosed but reported at £35m plus £5m in add-ons.

The Senegal defender joined West Ham from Slavia Prague last summer for £19m and impressed in a side that finished 18th. He registered five assists from left wing-back in his debut Premier League season.

Andrews praised his attributes and settling period in England, adding that Diouf suits Brentford’s age profile and bolsters an already competitive group.

Last season Brentford rotated Rico Henry and Aaron Hickey at left-back amid injuries, with Keane Lewis-Potter finishing the campaign there. He continued at full-back through pre-season and in the 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur, scoring on the opening weekend.

One option is to move Lewis-Potter back to attack, use Hickey as competition and cover for Michael Kayode at right-back, and leave Diouf and Henry to contest the left. Andrews regards Lewis-Potter’s versatility as a major strength, though he can envisage the forward featuring in different roles across the season.
