Andrews reflects on ‘unsavoury’ Wissa saga ahead of reunion

Keith Andrews has called Yoane Wissa’s Brentford exit unsavoury as Brentford prepare for a first reunion with the Newcastle forward. According to Hounslow Herald, the head coach inherited the fallout soon after promotion from set-piece coach.

The club’s messaging underlined the contrast. Bryan Mbeumo’s £71m move to Manchester United drew a warm tribute, while Wissa’s £55m deadline-day switch to Newcastle was confirmed in a brief statement despite his major role last season.

Wissa left pre-season early and reportedly said he would not play if a move was blocked, and he was omitted from early squads. An injury soon after signing kept him out of Newcastle’s 3-1 defeat at Brentford in November, when home fans voiced displeasure.

Now fit, Wissa is set to face Brentford. “I think it was unsavoury, full stop,” Andrews said, adding that the player made clear his wish to join Newcastle and that, for him, the issue was finances.

“Ultimately, they hit the price that our club was willing to accept. It’s the way of the world, unfortunately, which is why I’ve enjoyed this window,” he said. “The last couple of days in the window were bliss, unlike the last one.”

This winter was calmer, with Frank Onyeka the only first-team departure to Coventry. Andrews said his memories with Wissa are twofold, a productive spell as set-piece coach, then a tricky period as head coach during the summer.

Wissa debuted on 6 December and has three goals in 13 games. Brentford are 7th, three points above Newcastle in 11th. A hostile reception from the travelling Brentford support at St James’ Park is likely.
