Andrey Santos has been an ever-present figure for Manchester United in pre-season after arriving from Chelsea this summer. The Brazilian became the Red Devils’ first signing of the summer as they attempted to address Casemiro’s departure at the end of last season.

Santos made his debut against Wrexham and managed to catch the eye. He was subsequently impressive against Rosenborg and Atletico Madrid, and also had a stellar outing against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).

The 22 year old has experience of playing in the Premier League with Chelsea and his ability to carry out various roles in midfield could make him an asset for United. The Red Devils also signed Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa to further bolster their midfield, while Karl Darlow has arrived to provide cover for Senne Lammens.

Arsenal legend Paul Merson, however, remains unconvinced about INEOS’ decision to move for Santos this summer.

United tipped to finish sixth

In his column for Sky Sports, Merson predicted United to finish sixth in the Premier League this season. He wrote: “I just worry about Manchester United with Europe. We saw it last season at times – their squad is wafer thin.”

“If Bruno Fernandes got injured, then you’d really worry. And yes, they have Youri Tielemans in there but I don’t see a dominant midfield. Manchester United will have their ups and downs – and I don’t expect them to be challengers. It’s too early for that.”

The Arsenal legend went on to question the Red Devils’ decision to invest a sizeable fee in Santos this summer, adding: “I just don’t understand the Andrey Santos signing.”

“I might be wrong and Manchester United see something different. But a lot of Chelsea fans were asking what he does. He doesn’t break it up, doesn’t create chances, doesn’t score goals. That’s my problem.”

Praise for Tielemans

Merson went on to praise Tielemans as a good signing, but insisted that United’s defence and attack remain a concern ahead of the new season. He concluded: “I like the Tielemans signing, he’s a good footballer.”

“But while you have Tielemans and Fernandes as good footballers, you need more than that to get the ball back. United still have that same defence that can be leaky at times, while the attack is hot and cold.”

Perhaps Merson’s opinion would change if the Red Devils complete the arrival of Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Carlos Baleba. Recent reports suggest that United are close to securing the services of the Cameroonian.

Final Thoughts

United fans will not be too bothered about Merson’s assessment of Santos, especially on the back of his impressive performances in pre-season. All signs indicate that the Brazilian will hit the ground running at the Theatre of Dreams and prove his naysayers wrong.
