Andros Townsend escaped serious injury after being struck by a steamroller during a half-time warm-up on Saturday while playing for PT Prachuap FC in Thailand. The England international, 35, said he was left with only bruises and contusions.

“I thought it was over for me,” he said, speaking on Football Uncensored.

Townsend explained he had noticed two steamrollers on either side of the pitch before the interval and wondered what they were doing. “I did not pay it much attention. The next time I saw it, I was literally underneath it. Fortunately there was no serious damage. A few bruises and contusions, but I managed to come away unscathed, luckily.”

He admitted he still grimaces watching the footage back. “When I sent the video to my children, they thought it was AI-generated. I had to explain for a good 10 minutes that it was real.”

Despite the shock, Townsend came on in the second half. “My team-mates were telling me to see the doctor and calling for a stretcher. I have been through a lot of injuries, especially on the left leg that was crushed. It was not a steamroller that was going to stop me. I was able to carry on.”
