Nottingham Forest have sacked Ange Postecoglou just 39 days after appointing him as head coach, BBC Sport reports, a spell that now stands as the shortest permanent managerial reign in Premier League history.
The Australian’s dismissal came a mere 17 minutes after Forest’s 3-0 defeat to Chelsea at the City Ground on Saturday, their sixth loss in eight games under his leadership. During his brief tenure, Postecoglou failed to register a single victory, collecting only two draws in all competitions and leaving the club one point above the relegation zone.
In a terse statement, Forest confirmed the decision, citing “a series of disappointing results and performances.” The abrupt departure marks another episode in the club’s revolving-door approach to management, as Postecoglou becomes the third coach dismissed in as many months, following the exits of Nuno Espirito Santo and Steve Cooper.
Fulham boss Marco Silva is the leading candidate to take charge, though his substantial release clause may complicate matters. Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis previously worked with Silva at Olympiacos, and the Portuguese coach’s measured, possession-based approach is viewed internally as a model for long-term stability.
Alternative options include Sean Dyche, admired for his pragmatic style and Premier League survival record, while a romantic return for former boss Steve Cooper has also been discussed, though Cooper’s recent appointment at Brøndby makes that unlikely.
When Postecoglou arrived in early September, Forest were tenth in the table and dreaming of European football. But a run of heavy defeats, early cup elimination, and growing fan discontent quickly eroded optimism.
The 3-0 humbling by Chelsea proved decisive, ending a turbulent chapter for Postecoglou, his second Premier League dismissal in five months, and leaving Forest once again searching for direction amid chaos.
