Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has poured cold water on rumours linking him with the vacant England national team job.

Postecoglou is one of several managers linked with the role after Gareth Southgate stepped down following the defeat in the 2024 European Championship final.

England were beaten 2-1 by Spain, marking Southgate’s second consecutive defeat in the Euros showpiece after losing to Italy on home turf three years ago.

The 53-year-old received plenty of criticism for his cautious brand of football and has now tendered his resignation after eight years in charge.

The FA has reportedly been monitoring Postecoglou for several years, and technical director John McDermott has long admired the Australian’s tactical acumen.

The 58-year-old has plenty of experience coaching at international level. He guided Australia to the Asian Cup title in 2014/15, and his impressive resume caught the eye of the FA.

However, Postecoglou has reaffirmed his commitment to Tottenham, shutting down rumours of succeeding Southgate as England manager.

“I’m the Tottenham manager, and I want nothing else but to bring success to this football club, and until I do that, there’s no point thinking about anything else,” Postecoglou told Sky Sports News.

Tottenham have already begun their pre-season preparations, and Postecoglou’s side got the ball rolling with a 5-1 rout against Scottish club Hearts.

Brennan Johnson, Will Lankshear, Djed Spence and Mikey Moore all got on the score sheet before an own goal from Lewis Neilson rounded off an emphatic display at Tynecastle Park.

Spurs will travel to Loftus Road to take on Championship side Queens Park Rangers in their second pre-season fixture on Saturday.

Postecoglou joined Tottenham at the start of last season and enjoyed a fairly successful debut campaign by leading the club to a Europa League finish.

After narrowly missing out on Champions League football by two points, the Australian manager will be keen to go one better this season.
