For Angel City FC fans, it was a mixed weekend. Gotham City FC ended their four-game unbeaten streak in the National Women's Soccer League. Angel City lost 3-1 on Sunday for the first time in five games.
However, going forward, one of their key young defenders inked a new deal to remain with the club. Jeff Kassouf with ESPN.com was one of the first to report the new contract signing between Thompson and Angel City FC.
"I love LA and signing this new contract makes sense for me and my career," Thompson said in a statement. "Everyone at Angel City has been so supportive of me since I joined the club.
Thompson continued by saying, "My teammates are like family, the coaches and staff have my back, the fans are incredible. I love being able to play in front of my friends and family, and I am excited that I am staying. I will do everything I can to bring championships to this city."
The 19-year-old defender has appeared in 16 games for her team this season. Thompson has started all but two of them for Angel City.
In 2025, she scored once and recorded four assists. She plays right side on the defensive line with the same finesse and success as veteran defender Miki Yamane, who plays for the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Thompson has become a more physical player in her second season with Angel City FC. She has committed 22 fouls (compared to just eight in last year).
The defender has been pushing the action more on offense. Thompson has received an offside call three times in 2025 after not being called for it at all last season.
Both Angel City sporting director Mark Parsons and head coach Alex Straus are pleased with the young defender and her wanting to remain with the team. Thompson's sister, Alyssa, did not make the same decision, however, as she went to sign with Chelsea's women's team.
"We are thrilled that Gisele will be home in Los Angeles through 2029," Parsons said in a statement. "At age 19, she is already one of the most exciting players in the world.
"We will continue to support her as she develops as a pro and elevates her game under the guidance of [head coach] Alex Straus. She is making a significant impact on the club, and we look forward to many more years with her as part of the Angel City family."
