Manchester United are set to finish yet another transfer window without making a midfield signing for the first team.

United’s last midfield signing was Manuel Ugarte, who moved to Old Trafford from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2024.

Since then, the Red Devils have shown interest in a number of midfielders without making a decisive move for any, despite Ugarte’s failure to effectively replace the ageing Casemiro.

Angel Gomes to make Premier League return

Manchester United academy graduate Angel Gomes, who played alongside Michael Carrick on his Premier League debut in 2017, is closing in on a return to England’s top tier.

In 2020, Gomes left United to join French side Lille in his bid to fulfil his potential. The Englishman enjoyed a promising stint with Les Dogues and even managed to catch his boyhood club’s attention with his exploits in Ligue 1.

Gomes has been on United’s radar since late 2024. His technical ability and past connection made him an appealing target, but he ultimately ended up joining Olympique de Marseille last summer on a free transfer.

Mason Greenwood, also a product of United’s academy, has proven to be a huge success in the south of France. However, Gomes has struggled to find his feet under Roberto De Zerbi and is now set for a new adventure.

Wolves reach agreement to sign Angel Gomes

According to Fabrizio Romano, Wolverhampton Wanderers have agreed a deal in principle for Gomes.

The Italian journalist claims the Midlands club will sign the 25-year-old in an initial loan deal with a buy option worth around €7 million.

Furthermore, Wolves will pay €1m as a loan fee for the diminutive midfielder.

The England international is likely to play alongside Joao Gomes and Andre in the middle of the park for the relegation-fighting side.

United might keep a close eye on Wolves for the Brazilian Gomes ahead of their summer midfield overhaul. It has been widely reported that the combative midfielder is keen on joining the Premier League giants.
