Flamengo icon Ronaldo Angelim says he has invested more than R$ 1.5 million of his own money in R4, the women’s team he runs in Juazeiro do Norte, Ceará. The former defender said in a social media video posted on Thursday that the project has been running for over 10 years.

He complained that despite being fully legal, outside backing is scarce, with most help coming from Flamengo supporters via raffles and former team-mates such as Adriano. Angelim said his first event raised R$ 120,000, which paid for perimeter walls, while the next brought in only R$ 20,000.

Angelim founded R4 in 2010 as a social project in Juazeiro do Norte, which later became a professional side. The club returns to the Campeonato Cearense in 2026 after more than a decade of activity.

Honours include the Campeonato Barbalhense and the ASSEAJUNO tournament, the Associação de Apoio ao Esporte Amador de Juazeiro do Norte, along with other amateur titles in the Cariri region. To meet costs, the team stages charity matches and raffles.

In 2025, a 28m x 50m pitch was built with funds raised at a benefit game that featured Zico. Angelim and Adriano were key figures in Flamengo’s 2009 Brasileirão triumph, with the centre-back scoring in the final round against Grêmio at the Maracanã as a 2-1 comeback sealed the title, and Adriano finishing as top scorer on 19 goals.
