Manchester United are widely expected to reinforce their midfield in 2026.
The rebuild should have begun last summer, but INEOS failed in their pursuit of Ruben Amorim’s top target, Carlos Baleba.
United were keen on Baleba, with the player also keen on the move. However, Brighton & Hove Albion refused to entertain offers, slapping a ‘not for sale’ tag on the midfielder.
United’s hierarchy, wary of overpaying, chose not to push further.
Initially, United’s midfield looked fragile, and missing out on Baleba felt like a costly misstep.
Yet over time, Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro have forged a stable partnership in the pivot, bringing much-needed balance to an area that was previously shaky.
Despite their resurgence, Amorim remains intent on upgrading his midfield options.
That ambition has seen United linked with several midfielders, chief among them Stuttgart’s Angelo Stiller.
Stiller has rapidly become one of United’s top targets, with fresh updates on his potential Old Trafford switch surfacing almost daily.
The latest comes via Defensa Central, as cited by Fichajes.
According to Fichajes, quoting the reputable Real Madrid source, there is growing concern at the Santiago Bernabéu over United’s pursuit of Stiller.
Madrid are also interested in the technically gifted German, but a decisive January move by United could leave them frustrated.
Although Stiller’s market value stands at €45 million, the Spanish report claims:
“Manchester United are considering making an offer for Angelo Stiller in the upcoming winter transfer window, a deal that could reach 60 million euros.”
United could have waited until the summer, likely Madrid’s preferred timeline, to secure the player at a reduced fee.
However, while Stiller is understood to have a €36 million release clause active next summer, Stuttgart reportedly have the means to nullify it. By offering the player financial compensation, they can retain control and sell him at a higher fee.
Thus, United’s willingness to pay above market value may be a calculated move, designed to outbid Madrid and avoid a drawn-out transfer saga in summer 2026.
Stiller, an intelligent midfielder capable of operating across all phases, is press-resistant and excels as a progressive passer. He could well become Amorim’s “own Morten Hjulmand” at United.
