Eddie Howe's side were beaten 1-0 at the Stadium of Light on Sunday afternoon, with the only goal of the tie coming through a Nick Woltemade own goal shortly after half-time.

Guimarães worked valiantly to try and drag his team back into the derby clash but Newcastle were unable to get back onto level terms in the closing stages.

Howe admitted the defeat was a 'painful' one, with Guimarães echoing his boss' thoughts in a passionate post-match interview.

Here are some of the skipper's key thoughts:

On the defeat...

"Very bad. We are able to do much more than we did today. It's a derby - we had a great opportunity to get in front of them [in the league table].

"I have to take care of my words today because I'm very angry and disappointed. It's a tough one to accept.

"I think we have a better team than them but the way we played, we didn't show that on the pitch. I don't want to come here and just say words but I am very angry with the performance. I have to say sorry to the fans because we know we can perform much better than we did today."

On what was lacking...

"Shooting, the play around the box, crosses, duels, everything. We know when you play a derby these details matter.

"Nick [Woltemade] was so unlucky as well. I don't want to blame him because this [the own goal] can happen to anyone.

"Like I said, we can perform so much better than we did today. I was very excited before the game to play because of the team atmosphere. When we, as a team, don't perform as we should, it's frustrating.

"Derbies, for me, are like finals. No matter what you have to win and this one is a tough one to accept for me."

On Woltemade support...

"As I said, it can happen to anyone. For him it's a tough one, even more in a derby. So I tried to keep him in a positive way. He has been brilliant since he signed for the club.

"We have to support him all the way. Not just him, ourselves. But fans are right to be disappointed, like I am now."
