The Copa del Rey final rematch resumes at nine pm tomorrow at Anoeta. Home fans will recall the joy of 18 April at La Cartuja.
According to Diario Vasco, Antoine Griezmann will not feature, long feared by La Real supporters. Molina, Ruggeri and Musso will not play either, while Jan Oblak will.
Atlético arrive with reinforcements from Leverkusen, Tottenham, Sporting de Lisboa, Paris Saint Germain and Juventus, including Grimaldo, Cuti Romero, Morten Hjulmand, Kang-in Lee and Jonathan David. Their pedigrees point to ready-made signings rather than punts.
In Madrid, Julián Álvarez’s wish, voiced at the World Cup, to leave Atlético remains an issue. Simeone has shielded him, handing a start at Anfield on Wednesday, where he impressed and created chances. To avoid whistles at the Metropolitano, there is no doubt Simeone has tended to start him away, and he could again tomorrow.
The North is turning hostile after defeats at San Mamés and Anfield Road. Anoeta could bring a third straight loss, and a home win would lift La Real above them, albeit with Matarazzo’s side on one game more.
Atlético’s back line has frayed, with only one clean sheet, a 2-0 opener against Málaga. Liverpool scored two, Athletic three, Sevilla one and Villarreal two, and after Anfield Simeone said they were conceding too many and not defending well. La Real’s task is to keep Oblak retrieving from his net.
