Omar Marmoush has been scoring goals since returning from AFCON. He hit the back of the net in Manchester City’s recent win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Etihad. Marmoush didn’t score in City’s win over Galatasaray or in the brief time he was on the pitch last weekend in Manchester City’s 2-all draw with Tottenham. However, Marmoush bagged a brace against Newcastle United to help Manchester City book their place in this season’s Carabao Cup final with a 3-1 win over Eddie Howe’s side at the Etihad.
With Marmoush in form, City have another dangerous weapon in the final third. The Egyptian international could be a key player this weekend as Manchester City bid to beat Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday in a crucial Premier League fixture.
Marmoush put in an energetic and lively display against Newcastle. His intelligent movement and interplay with his teammates helped City routinely get at Eddie Howe’s side, as did Newcastle’s approach in the first half. Omar Marmoush bagged a brace, and although both goals could be considered fortunate, the Egyptian international did the work to earn his rewards.
For Omar Marmoush’s first goal, he combined superbly with Tijjani Reijnders to get behind the Newcastle defence. Marmoush’s backheel to Reijnders and run was superb. He got lucky as his heavy first touch got away from him as Newcastle’s defender Dan Burn reached the ball before Marmoush. But Burn’s clearance hit the Egyptian international before looping over the oncoming Aaron Ramsdale to give City the lead in the seventh minute. It was a fortunate goal, but Marmoush’s movement and interplay with Reijnders created the opening.

For his second goal, Marmoush showed his goal scoring instincts. Newcastle right-back Kieran Trippier cleared an Antoine Semenyo cross in the air and Marmoush was on hand to head home. Marmoush had a brace inside half an hour and he had his rewards for his intelligent movement and predatory instincts. With Marmoush in form, City have another weapon in the final third. That could be vital for City in their next match against Liverpool.
Up next for Manchester City is a crucial Premier League fixture against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday. Pep Guardiola’s side sits six points behind Arsenal, who lead the league. Sunday’s match is a massive one for City, and you do sense that Pep Guardiola’s side cannot afford to drop many more points. Looking at Sunday’s match, the Liverpool defence does look to be an area of their side that City can exploit. If that is the case, Marmoush could have an important role to play at Anfield if he does start.
The movement and interplay with his teammates that Marmoush adds could unsettle Liverpool’s defence, especially if City has space to operate in the final third. Marmoush should be full of confidence after his brace against Newcastle. If he does start on Sunday, he could be a match-winner for City. Of course, that depends on whether Marmoush starts. I’d expect Erling Haaland to start against Liverpool. Whether or not Semenyo, or Marmoush, or both start with him remains to be seen.
Manchester City have a different dynamic in the final third with Omar Marmoush back among the goals. The Egyptian international adds variety and intelligence to City’s attacking play. Whether or not Marmoush starts on Sunday remains to be seen, but if he does, he could have a massive role to play in a huge fixture at Anfield.
