Another midfield target for Manchester City has come into view, and perhaps it is a move that suits

If Enzo Maresca decides to use Elliot Anderson as a number six in midfield, Manchester City will need to find players who can combine well with the strengths of the England international. Currently, City have Anderson, Mateo Kovacic, and Nico Gonzalez as recognised midfielders who could form a double pivot in midfield in their squad. Perhaps, Nico O’Reilly and Rico Lewis could also slot into this role. Manchester City are bidding to bolster their midfield this summer. Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton has now been named as a midfielder that City could potentially bid to sign. The strengths of Adam Wharton do look suited to playing in an Enzo Maresca side and alongside Elliot Anderson.

Adam Wharton has been named as a potential target for Manchester City.

Two reports have named Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton as a potential target for Manchester City. First, Jack Rosser has reported for The Sun that the FA Cup and Carabao Cup holders could consider a move for Adam Wharton. It is reported that Crystal Palace’s price tag to sell Wharton is unknown. Rosser indicates that perhaps a package of up to £100 million could be Palace’s asking price for the England international.

Ben Ransom has reported for Sky Sports that Adam Wharton wasn’t included on a list of Manchester City’s transfer targets for this summer but that stance has now softened, Ransom adds. Furthermore, Ransom reports that the expectation is that City will make a move to sign Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez. However, City’s change in stance over a possible move for Adam Wharton shows that they could be moving onto other midfield targets.

There is plenty of sense in a City move for Adam Wharton.

If Manchester City want a midfielder who can possess a wide and elite range of passing alongside Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton could be that player. Wharton is blessed with elite vision with the ball and he scans the pitch exceptionally well before receiving possession. He can also make every pass in the book. Wharton can break open a game in an instant with his wand of a left foot. His ability to break the lines with a decisive ball is almost second to none in English football.

The fact that Wharton can do this with a first time ball or after one or two touches after receiving the ball could be ideally suited to an Enzo Maresca side. Maresca wants to play a possession-based style of football with the ability to play at a quicker tempo when required. Adam Wharton would fulfil this demand. Also, getting the ball out wide or in behind for Haaland is a key to Manchester City’s attack. Wharton would also be perfect for this style of play.

The biggest knock on Adam Wharton has been his ability out of possession. Wharton isn’t elite in this aspect of his game. He can struggle in physical duels and his ability to cover the pitch has been a knock on his play. However, pairing Wharton with Elliot Anderson would be ideal to cover those perceived weaknesses in Wharton’s game. In fact, putting Wharton and Anderson together would be tantalizing from a Manchester City point of view.

Final thoughts.

It remains to be seen if Manchester City will pivot away from a potential move for Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez and perhaps consider a move for Adam Wharton. It is also not known if Crystal Palace would be open to selling Wharton so late in the transfer window. What is clear is that Wharton could slot into Manchester City’s midfield and become a weapon if they decided to pursue a move. Also, Wharton is only 22 years old. Perhaps signing a midfielder that has the potential to form a devastating partnership with Elliot Anderson for years to come may be a move that Manchester City will consider strongly to bolster their midfield.
