Another one out at Gent as top scorer nears Lecce move

After loaning Dante Vanzeir out to Cercle Brugge, Gent could be about to see another player leave. HLN are reporting that Israeli international Omri Gandelman is close to a move to Lecce. While Vanzeir struggled to score with Gent, the same cannot be said for Gandelman. The midfielder initially appeared to join Gent as a holding one, but instead turned into a fox in the box. Gandelman is Gent’s top scorer this season with seven league goals. The move is said to be a loan with a mandatory purchase option for Lecce.

Overall, Lecce will be signing a player that can sometimes be anonymous in games before coming up with a big moment. At times, coaches have struggled to see the value in Gandelman. While he does not offer as much as one might like in midfield, his ability to time his runs into the box can be invaluable. For context, his best scoring season with Maccabi Netanya was eight goals in 35 games. For Gent, it was 13 goals in 45 games. He has scored double figures in the two full seasons he has been with Gent and was well on the way to doing so again. Since 2023 Gandelman has played 107 games for the club, scoring 33 goals.

It is somewhat surprising that Lecce are coming back to the Pro League to do their shopping. In the past, Lecce have signed Nikola Stulic and Konon N’Dri from the Pro League. Since joining last February, N’Dri has played 24 times for Lecce, scoring twice. Stulic was the big striker signing this summer, but he has failed to show his Charleroi form in Serie A. The Serbian has so far only scored one goal in 17 games for Lecce. If Gandelman doesn’t come off for Lecce, one would expect they will stop shopping in Belgium for players.
