FC Barcelona fans got a good opportunity to see their most recent signing, Anthony Gordon, in action as he started for England for his national team’s last friendly ahead of the World Cup, against Costa Rica, last night, which ended in a 3-0 win for the English side.
The winger started along with some of the biggest current names in European football, like Harry Kane, Declan Rice, and Jude Bellingham, but was still able to shine the brightest in this game.
After providing the assist for his side’s opening goal, scored by Rice, he himself got on the scoresheet as he converted the penalty to make the score 2-0. However, his performance went beyond this assist and goal, as he also impressed with his overall offensive skills and proved to be a real menace for the Costa Rican defense.
As SPORT has reported, Gordon also spoke to the media in the mixed zone after the game, and commented on how keen he is to take penalties:
“I was excited because Harry Kane wasn’t on the pitch. I was looking for him, but when I realized he wasn’t there, I wanted to take it. I love the pressure that comes with penalties.”
The winger also opened up on the pressure and advantage of playing for side filled with great players:
“There is always pressure when playing for England, because you know there are great players waiting to come off the bench and make a difference. If you can’t deal with that, then you’re not at the right level. I play alongside incredible players, so they make me look much better.”
Although he did not specifically talk about Barcelona, these comments still give away much on Gordon’s mentality as a player. He made it clear that he is not shy to take his chances when the pressure is high, and also commented on how he tries to give his best when playing for a side filled with stars, showcasing his competitive nature.
These attributes would come in quite handy when he starts playing for Barcelona, and might have been some of the factors that compelled Deco to make such a big bet on him this summer. Hopefully, he would have a great World Cup, and keep showing the form he did in this match against Costa Rica when he dons the Blaugrana shirt next season.
