Earlier in the summer, Barcelona completed the signing of Anthony Gordon after they agreed an €80m deal with Newcastle United. The 25-year-old is seen as the successor to Marcus Rashford, who is very unlikely to return to the Spotify Camp Nou after his loan spell officially came to an end in June.
But rather than be disappointed at the idea of Gordon replacing him, Rashford was very happy for his international colleague, as the former himself revealed to the media this week (via MD). He also explained that Rashford has been helping him ahead of moving to Catalonia later this summer.
“He congratulated me as soon as he saw me. It has helped me a lot. I’m looking for a house and he’s given me information about the club, which is very good for me, as I haven’t been there yet. It’s difficult for me because all my attention is here and he’s helped me a lot.”
Gordon was also asked about competing with Rashford for a place in the England line-up. The pair have been vying for the left wing position during the 2026 World Cup, and the new Barcelona signing admitted that he has enjoyed the challenge.
“He loves to play football. He’s always with the ball, making touches and stuff. A lovely boy, well educated, from a good family, as far as I know. We are competing for a place and that’s football. In the elite there is always going to be that, and it usually suits me, so I have no problem with it, and I’m sure he doesn’t either.”
Gordon, who’s had an impressive World Cup so far, will have a similar battle on his hands during his first season at Barcelona. Raphinha has been the undisputed starter on the left side of Hansi Flick’s attack over the last two years, although he will surely relish the challenge of staking his claim when he makes the move to Catalonia after the tournament in North America is over.
