Anton Stach has been omitted from Germany’s 2026 World Cup squad, despite indications his ankle injury is not serious.

The Leeds United midfielder sustained a cut around his ankle in the win over Brighton and Hove Albion, landing awkwardly and tangling with an opponent. He attempted to play on but was stretchered off as blood showed through his sock. According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, the cut could keep him out for two or three weeks.

On Thursday morning, head coach Julian Nagelsmann named his squad for this summer’s tournament and Stach was not included.

Stach returned to the national set-up in March, coming off the bench for 10 minutes in the 4-3 win over Switzerland, his first involvement since June 2022.

In his debut Premier League season he has been a key figure in Leeds’ survival push, scoring five goals and adding three assists. His physical presence, pressing and reading of play have underpinned Daniel Farke’s defensive work, while his chance creation and set pieces have boosted the attack.

Farke will provide a full update on Stach’s fitness before the West Ham United game when he meets the media on Friday afternoon.
