Anton Stach played phone tag with Julian Nagelsmann before discovering his Germany recall, sparking joyous scenes at home.
According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, the Leeds United midfielder, 27, has been named in the squad for friendlies against Switzerland and Ghana in the upcoming international window.
It is four years since Stach was last in the national set-up. Nagelsmann had recently said Stach was doing well but not outstanding in the air or a top ball-winner, which cast doubt over a return, yet his Premier League form has caught the head coach's eye.
He noticed a missed call from a German number, rang back and got no answer, then answered when Nagelsmann called again and introduced himself. Stach said he was stunned and struggled to recall what he said, while his wife, leaning by the phone, screamed as a friend joined in.
He marked the news quietly, dropping his friend at Leeds central station, then eating shawarma in the city centre in the sunshine.
At Thorp Arch on Thursday, team-mates who had seen the news congratulated him as Leeds prepared for Saturday's meeting with Brentford.
Head coach Daniel Farke said he thought the call-up was well deserved, praising Stach's consistency, quick adaptation to the Premier League, defensive work, duels, goals and assists, influence on the attack and versatility, and calling him a key player.
