Antonio Conte has emerged as a top candidate to become Manchester United’s head coach if Michael Carrick is sacked.

According to Calciomercato.it, the Red Devils have placed Conte at the top of their managerial wish list and established initial contacts to assess his availability.

Carrick led United to a third-place Premier League finish last season after taking over as interim manager in January.

But results have been poor this season after the club decided to hand him the permanent role.

The Manchester giants have collected just five points from their opening five league fixtures, winning one, losing two and drawing two.

There is currently no indication United are planning to remove Carrick from his role.

But if results do not change soon, the club’s hierarchy could be forced to make a change in the dugout.

Should United appoint Conte?

The Italian boss has been out of work since leaving Napoli at the end of last season.

He is widely regarded as one of the best coaches in the world.

Conte has won 11 major trophies in his managerial career, including five Serie A titles with Juventus, Inter Milan and Napoli.

He also knows English football intimately, having previously managed Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.

The 57-year-old won the Premier League and FA Cup during his spell at Chelsea.

He later led Tottenham to a top four finish, before being sacked as manager following a stunning rant against his own players and former club chairman Daniel Levy.

Conte’s CV is certainly remarkable, but he is a notoriously combustible coach who has repeatedly fallen out with his employers.
