Antonio Conte has emerged as a top candidate to become Manchester United’s manager if Michael Carrick is sacked.

According to Calciomercato, Conte is at the top of their managerial wish list, and they have established contact to assess his availability.

Carrick led United to a third-place Premier League finish last season after taking over as interim manager in January. He was appointed permanently this summer.

However, results have been poor at the start of this season. United have collected just five points from their opening five league fixtures (W1, D2, L2).

There is currently no indication United are planning to dismiss Carrick, but they could be forced to make a change if results don’t improve.

Should United appoint Conte?

Conte has been out of work since leaving Napoli at the end of last season. He is widely regarded as one of the world’s best managers.

He has won 11 major trophies in his managerial career, including five Serie A titles with Juventus, Inter Milan and Napoli.

Conte knows English football intimately, having previously managed Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.

The 57-year-old won the Premier League and FA Cup during his spell at Chelsea.

He later led Tottenham to a top-four finish before being sacked after a stunning rant against his own players and former club chairman Daniel Levy.

Conte’s CV is remarkable, but he is a notoriously combustible character who has repeatedly fallen out with his employers.
