Harvey Barnes had a chance to equalise, but his effort was calmly collected by goalkeeper Mark Flekken.

Newcastle came close to drawing level when Alejandro Grimaldo almost turned the ball into the net, but Flekken reacted well to keep it out.

Aaron Ramsdale had to be alert to prevent Jarell Quansah from doubling Leverkusen’s advantage before the break.

The Magpies made it 1-1 after the break from the penalty spot. Flekken brought down Nick Woltemade, and Anthony Gordon stepped up to score.

Gordon has now scored five goals in the competition this season, becoming the second Newcastle player to score at least five in a single campaign since Alan Shearer, who bagged six in 2002/03.

Just after the hour mark, Gordon nearly put Newcastle ahead after a drive from the left flank. His effort hit the woodwork.

The English winger eventually scored the visitors’ second goal, delivering a brilliant cross for substitute Lewis Miley to head into the bottom corner.

Newcastle almost added to their advantage when Flekken pushed away Thiaw’s header from close range.

Shortly after, Jacob Murphy hit the woodwork with a powerful strike.

Two minutes from time, Ibrahim Maza slipped the ball through for Grimaldo to score, rescuing a point for Leverkusen.

The result leaves Newcastle in 12th position in the standings, while Leverkusen are placed 20th.
