Antwerp sack Stef Wils following defeat to Dender

Antwerp have called time on Stef Wils’ period in charge of the club. After a humiliating defeat at home to Dender at the weekend, the Great Old have decided that it is time to make a change. Dender had not won in the Pro League after 14 games but struck late to beat Antwerp 2-1 at home. It was clear that, even a draw would probably not have saved Wils from the chop. A victory over RAAL La Louviere just before the international break had been enough to save him for another day, but there was no chance that Antwerp could accept defeat at home to Dender.

Wils may feel he was dealt a bad hand when given the job in the summer. He wasn’t the sides first choice, with Charleroi head coach Rik De Mil the man they wanted. Plenty of key players have left Antwerp over recent seasons and not really been replaced. The final nail in the coffin was the news that veteran striker Vincent Janssen would miss the game against Dender with an injury. Antwerp have looked pretty toothless up front even with Janssen, and without him they understandably struggled.

Marc Overmars and co will now have to find a coach who can galvanise the squad and steer them away from the bottom four.
