Royal Antwerp have completed the loan signing of Owen Wijndal from Ajax. The Dutch left-back will spend the season with the Belgian champions, having featured just 20 times in the Eredivisie for Ajax last season. The 23-year-old only started 11 of those games.
Owen Wijndal joined Ajax from AZ Alkmaar in the summer of 2022 for around €10m. It’s been a tough start to life in Amsterdam for the 11-time Netherlands international, but the move to Antwerp will certainly help to regain his confidence. During the summer, Ajax signed 21-year-old left-back Gaston Ávila from Antwerp. This was an indication that Wijndal had fallen further down the pecking order.
During the final few days of the transfer window, Fulham were reportedly interested in Owen Wijndal. The Premier League side were looking for a left-back to compete with US international Antonee Robinson. A move to Craven Cottage would have seen Wijndal link up with former teammate Calvin Bassey, who recently made a permanent move from Ajax to Fulham.
