8 QPR players are set to become free agents this summer and can be signed by anyone for £0.
Queen’s Park Rangers have enjoyed a renaissance under Marti Cifuentes in recent months, following a poor start to the season.
The popular manager firmly believed he was the man to turn the club’s fortunes around after the rocky patch at the start of the season, and has certainly proven his claim to be true. The R’s sit in the middle of the pack and aren’t a million miles away from the play-offs.
Importantly, the club has managed to tie down two of their most exciting prospects to new deals. Alfie Lloyd and Rayan Kolli both penned new contracts to extend their stays at Loftus Road. Despite this, there are still a few key players who are out of contract in the summer, which Cifuentes will be desperate to retain.
There will certainly be a few fellow Championship clubs sniffing around these players who are due to depart the club in the summer.
According to Transfermarkt, these are the current QPR players who could be snapped up by a Championship rival for free this summer.
Despite plenty of interest from Sheffield United in January, the R’s managed to retain their star defender, fending off interest from the promotion hopefuls. Jimmy Dunne has been an integral part of Cifuentes’ turnaround in the second part of the campaign.
At 27 years old, the former Burnley defender is at the peak of his career, and could fancy himself at a higher level should the opportunity arise. Ensuring QPR lock down their star man to a new deal will be key, or the decision to retain him in January could backfire.
Dunne’s full-back colleague, Kenneth Paal, is also out of contract at the end of the season. The 27-year-old has also been ever-present for the R’s this season on the left side of the defence.
The Suriname international will most likely be on the radar of plenty of other Championship clubs, having proven to be a quality left-back in the second tier since his arrival at Loftus Road.
Swiss target forward Michael Frey is next up on the list of out-of-contract QPR players. The attacker arrived in London last January, following a respectable career across Europe.
Whilst he’s been less prominent in the starting XI than the previous two players, Frey has been important to the former Premier League side’s build-up play when he’s been on the pitch. He also has an option to extend his stay by another year.
A great veteran, Steve Cook is still an important part of the QPR set-up at 33 years old, which is a testament to his quality and experience at the back. The defender has been an important player for the R’s, following his arrival in 2023.
It would be hard to imagine a world where other Championship clubs aren’t looking at Cook, with his deal set to expire. The experience and leadership he brings would be hard for any club to ignore.
A versatile and experienced defender, Morgan Fox has been unlucky to not feature as much as he’d have hoped for the Hoops after multiple injury setbacks. Whilst he’s made plenty of appearances over his 18 months in the capital, the Welshman would surely like to find minutes more consistently.
At 31 years old, the ex-Welsh youth international is approaching the twilight of his career. He will want to round out his career by playing as much as possible. With vast experience at the Championship level, Fox would be a great addition to a newly promoted side.
Danish attacking midfielder, Lucas Andersen, has been unlucky with recent injuries and stiff competition for a place in the starting squad this season. Despite this, the Dane has featured in the majority of QPR’s matches this season.
The 30-year-old is another player who is rapidly approaching the twilight of his career, and if minutes aren’t guaranteed at Loftus Road, he could find himself on the radar of QPR’s rivals.
Jack Colback’s goal against Blackburn Rovers will live long in the memories of QPR supporters. Similarly to Cook, the midfielder is proving his worth in the latter years of his career but has found game time hard to come by.
Colback could be on the radar of other Championship clubs, but the veteran midfielder could have his stay extended by a further year, thanks to an option in his contract, should the club feel it’s the right decision.
Once a highly-rated goalkeeper at Dundalk, Nathan Shepperd has not pulled on an R’s shirt since he arrived at Loftus Road in the summer. This was also the case at his previous club, Wycombe Wanderers.
Playing third-fiddle behind Joe Walsh and Paul Nardi, and with Murphy Cooper returning from a successful loan spell at Stevenage in the summer, it seems unlikely Shepperd will remain at Loftus Road. At the current stage of his career, it’s important for the former Welsh youth international to get consistent minutes.
