Wojciech Szczesny has been the starting goalkeeper for FC Barcelona since the start of 2025, after having joined the Blaugrana club following Ter Stegen’s serious injury.
Inaki Pena remained the team’s starting goalkeeper following the German captain’s injury, but since the turn of the year, it has been the Pole who has been starting all the games for Hansi Flick whenever he is available.
With the way he is taking advantage of every opportunity, there is not much of a chance for Pena to get a starting spot again in Flick’s team. However, Szczesny’s own starting spot is not guaranteed either.
This is particularly the case as Ter Stegen is nearing his return from injury and can make his return to group training in the coming few days.
In fact, Hansi Flick was asked about the competition between these two top-class goalkeepers and which of them will be the starter going forward.
As Mundo Deportivo has reported, the German coach did not provide a clear answer and kept the journalists guessing about the situation going forward:
“Anything can happen in football. I can’t give you a 100% answer.”
Before Flick, Szczesny also addressed the press and was also asked about this situation. The Polish veteran assured the journalists that there was no tension between him and Ter Stegen, and both of them are committed to help the team in whatever way they can:
“Right now, Marc is only focused on getting back to training and there’s no need for him to think about that. We understand the situation very well and there’s no tension between us. Whatever happens, we’ll understand and respect it. We both want what’s best for the team.”
Furthermore, Szczesny also recognised the quality of Ter Stegen:
“Marc is at a very high level and there’s no point in making comparisons. He’s returning to training after a very serious injury, and the truth is that once he’s back to 100%, there won’t be many goalkeepers at his level.”
Ter Stegen is the captain and one of the most important players in this Barcelona team, while Szczesny has also not given any reason to take away his starting role. Thus, Hansi Flick will have quite a difficult decision on his hands once the German returns to availability, but hopefully, this situation will only push these two players to give their best for the team.
