„Anything is possible“: Osnabrück coach aims for a cup upset against Bayern | OneFootball

FC Bayern faces a tough challenge in the first round of the DFB Cup. The Bavarians are set to take on a second-division team, which is never easy. They’ll travel to the Bremer Brücke to face VfL Osnabrück. 

And after Osnabrück managed to beat VfL Bochum despite a mixed start to the season, they’ve gained a bit more confidence.

This is also evident in the comments from coach Timo Schultz, who is quite optimistic ahead of the match against Bayern that there’s a chance for an upset.

Schultz wants to shock Bayern

“It’s the DFB Cup; it has its own rules. We want to reach the second round, even against Bayern Munich. The Bremer Brücke is a very special stadium. I know the odds are probably not in our favor, but anything is possible in the DFB Cup,” Schultz explained.

And he also pointed out: “Bayern Munich won the cup last year, but in the years before that, they made it to the quarterfinals at best. The game starts at 0–0; we’re playing eleven against eleven. Let’s see what happens.” So there’s a sense that they can achieve something against the heavy favorites. And Schultz already shocked Bayern as a player, having been part of FC St. Pauli’s “World Cup winner-beater” team in 2002.

But how does Schultz plan to contain Bayern’s footballing dominance? “We have to play boldly, even when we have the ball, to create the chances we need if we want to win the game. I think we have the quality to do that. That will be our approach: to keep them busy with the ball as well, instead of just relying on counterattacks,” the Osnabrück coach explained aggressively. So it could be a difficult game for Bayern if they don’t perform at their absolute best.
