Christopher Michel reports that Ao Tanaka is likely to stay at Fortuna Düsseldorf this winter as he aims to help the club with promotion to the Bundesliga.
The midfielder has turned down the opportunity to represent Japan at the Asia Cup as he wishes to stay at Düsseldorf. If Tanaka had left for the Asia Cup he could miss at most six games including key games against St.Pauli in both the league and in the DFB Pokal quarter finals.
However, Tanaka has still attracted interest from Bundesliga clubs. It was reported by Sky Germany that VfB Stuttgart had shown an interest in the midfielder but they are unwilling to pay the requested price for him in the winter as they value him at around €2-3m but are still interested in bringing Tanaka to the club in the summer.
Borussia Mönchengladbach and Freiburg are also said to be interested in Tanaka but as previously mentioned any move is likely to materials in the winter.
