Real Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa said his team must stay fully focused against Benfica to secure direct qualification in Champions League.

Arbeloa Sets the Tone Before Lisbon Test

Alvaro Arbeloa spoke at press conference ahead of the Champions League match against Benfica scheduled for Wednesday in Lisbon.

The match is part of Matchday 8, the final round of the league phase in the 2025 /26 Champions League season.

Real Madrid sit on 15 point and need 1 point to qualify directly for the round of 16 avoiding the playoff round.

Arbeloa described the match as decisive warning his players that Benfica are dangerous in any competition and must be respected from first minute.

“We must Be at our best”

Speaking to Spanish newspaper AS, Arbeloa said Real Madrid must play with full concentration for the entire match. He stressed that every minute will matter and that any drop in focus could be costly.

The coach added that since his arrival, he has seen group of players who are committed, listen well and work hard in training.

However he admitted that the team still has room to improve if they want to compete for every trophy.

Warm words for Jose Mourinho

Arbeloa also spoke at length about Jose Mourinho after following his former coach’s press conference earlier in the day.

He said it was honor to hear Mourinho speak about him and described the Portuguese coach as more than just manager but also close friend.

Arbeloa thanked Mourinho for his support and said he looks forward to meeting him before the match.

Arbeloa made it clear that Mourinho is unique figure in football and cannot be copied. He added that while his own style is influenced by Mourinho, his success depends on staying true to himself.

Praise for Bellingham and Guler

The Real Madrid coach also highlighted the impact of Jude Bellingham calling him player with exceptional quality, leadership and commitment.

Arbeloa said Bellingham’s work rate in training and matches makes him key figure for the club’s future.

He also spoke positively about Arda Guler praising his vision, passing and effort on both sides of the pitch.

Arbeloa said the young midfielder has great potential and will become important player with time & development.

Vinicius and Mbappe partnership

Arbeloa asked about building chemistry between Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe. He explained that relationships on the pitch are very important and said the coaching staff are working on improving movement, positioning and understanding between attacking players.

Focus on the present

When asked about possible future scenarios involving Mourinho, Arbeloa refused to speculate.

He said his full focus is on the present starting with the Benfica match and on getting the best out of his players.
