Arena do Grêmio started its scheduled December pitch replacement on Wednesday. According to Globo.com, the club expects the surface to be playable again for the Gauchão, which begins on the weekend of 10 and 11 January.
The existing grass had spent at least four days beneath temporary decking for a concert last Saturday, leaving visible marks from the period without light. Sections of turf have been lifted across the pitch.
The stadium is switching to Tahoma, a Bermuda variety, chosen for density, stability and a uniform colour. Tahoma is known for coping with cold and shade, important at an arena with limited natural light. Arena do Grêmio will be the first Série A venue to use it.
The same grass has been used at Club World Cup venues and is set for six stadiums at the 2026 World Cup. It replaces Zeon, which was laid during replanting after last May’s floods.
The new surface will be supported by nine artificial lighting rigs acquired by businessman Marcelo Marques. The same equipment served the previous pitch.
