Argentina face disciplinary action over Falkland Islands banner

Argentina are set to face disciplinary action after players held up a Falkland Islands banner following their World Cup semi-final win over England in Atlanta.

Tournament rule 34.3 bans political messages before, during or after matches, yet squad members displayed a banner reading 'Las Malvinas son Argentinas', translated as 'The Falkland Islands are Argentinian'. FIFA said its independent Disciplinary Committee is assessing match reports and relevant circumstances before deciding on any potential further steps under the FIFA Disciplinary Code.

The Falkland Islands are a UK overseas territory, with islanders voting overwhelmingly in 2013 to remain so. In April 1982 Argentinian forces invaded, but surrendered by June that year.

Argentina were fined by FIFA for holding a banner with the same slogan after a 2014 friendly against Slovenia. At the 2022 World Cup, FIFA told the Football Association that England captain Harry Kane would face sporting sanctions starting with a yellow card if he wore a rainbow-coloured OneLove armband in Qatar, where homosexuality is criminalised.

Spain players Rodri and Alvaro Morata received one-match bans from UEFA after singing about their country’s claim to Gibraltar following their Euro 2024 triumph.
