Jhon Arias was unveiled on Friday at Palmeiras’ Academia de Futebol. The Colombian explained his decision to join despite previously stating he would only return to Brazil to play for Fluminense.

According to Globo.com, he underlined his respect for Fluminense and said football moves quickly, noting Palmeiras offered the conditions to pursue short and medium term goals. He spoke of aiming to win titles again, maintain a high level and push for the World Cup, adding that Palmeiras gave him that assurance.

He said he turned down Flamengo because of his respect for Fluminense, describing Flamengo as a direct rival. He called Palmeiras a global force and expressed hope that by year end they would be celebrating a successful season.

Arias had lost his place at Wolverhampton in England after the team were practically relegated to the second tier, something that concerned him with the World Cup in mind. Palmeiras paid 25 million euros to complete the signing. He is registered for the Paulistão and listed on the BID.

A debut is not expected on Sunday against Guarani, although he has made himself available. He only arrived on Friday morning and will speak with Abel Ferreira and the squad before agreeing the right moment to start.

Arias will wear number 11 for Palmeiras. He discussed multiple conversations with Abel during talks and said he can operate in several attacking roles, stressing he is here to contribute wherever needed.
