Liverpool completed one of the biggest smash and grabs in Champions League history after picking up a massive 1-0 win against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night away from home.
Harvey Elliott scored the only goal towards the end of the game, as the Reds took a slender lead in the last 16 first-leg tie.
It was a ruthless domination from the home side, where they managed 27 shots and forced Alisson Becker to make as many as nine saves.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia had a goal ruled out (rightly), while Ousmane Dembele was unplayable at times, but PSG couldn’t break Liverpool’s last defence. Alisson stood up as the great wall that PSG couldn’t break down.
Ibrahima Konate also had a lucky escape and he avoided a red card despite shoving Bradley Barcola over just outside the box.
When Mohamed Salah was taken off and Elliott replaced him, it felt like Liverpool were looking for a draw, but there was one final twist in the tale.
Darwin Nunez found Elliott on the right-hand side, who placed it beautifully in the bottom corner past Gianluigi Donnarumma to give Liverpool a huge moment in this tie.
However, the night belongs to one man, and both Arne Slot and Elliott praised him heavily after the game. Both felt that the Brazilian is the best goalkeeper in the world at the moment, with Elliott describing him as an “unbelievable” player.
Slot said: “I have had some very good players as a manager but never the best goalkeeper in the world until now.
“He showed that he is the best in the world today. To go away with a win here was probably a bit more than we deserved.”
Elliot added: “I’ve got no words, to be honest. This guy, he’s unbelievable, the best in the world.
“Each and every game he shows it, [he] keeps us in so many games. Like tonight, it’s my opportunity to repay this man. Without him, I don’t know where we’d be. Hopefully he can keep [saving] and hopefully we can keep finishing chances. It was a great team performance.”
No one thought that Liverpool would sneak a victory, especially the way they got outplayed by PSG.
Rio Ferdinand was spot-on with his assessment: “PSG had many moments and didn’t take them. If you don’t punish teams when they are weak, when they are there for the taking, you can get punished yourself.”
This tie is far from over, but Liverpool will be confident that they can get the job done in the second leg at Anfield.
