Liverpool manager Arne Slot admitted he must set a better example in the future after details of his expletive-laden rant at referee Michael Oliver were revealed.

Slot lost his temper with Oliver in the aftermath of the Merseyside derby with Everton, which saw Liverpool held to a 2-2 draw after James Tarkowski's dramatic stoppage-time equaliser.

The Dutchman stormed onto the pitch, telling Oliver that he'd "f**king gave them everything" – a reference to Slot and Liverpool's coaching staff feeling that a number of key decisions had gone Everton's way – and that "if we don't win the league, I'll f**king blame you."

The FA banned Slot and his assistant Spike Hulshoff from the touchline for two matches – the suspension only applies to domestic competition and does not come into effect for Liverpool's Champions League clash with PSG – and fined the former Feyenoord boss £70,000.

Speaking to the media ahead of the first leg clash with PSG, Slot admitted he'd misjudged the situation and had let his emotions get the best of him.

"The moment it happened, I was quite emotional for everything that happened in the last seven or eight minutes and maybe the whole game," Slot said.

"I chose to go on pitch instead of staying calm, staying inside and then talking to Michael. Now I don't have the same emotions anymore so I think I should set a better example than I set back then and not go into the situation again.

"It's clear what I've written and what Michael has written [in the report]. Michael has been in the news quite a lot recently and I don't think it helps if I add something to that now I have my emotions under control."

Oliver has been in the spotlight on more than one occasion this season, namely for his decision to send off Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly against Wolverhampton Wanderers – the red card was subsequently overturned upon appeal.

He was placed under police protection in the days following the game having received a torrent of abuse and threats on social media.

Oliver was also the referee in charge of Crystal Palace's FA Cup fifth round tie with Millwall, which saw striker Jean-Philippe Mateta receive a sickening blow to the head after colliding with the high boot of goalkeeper Liam Roberts. The Frenchman required 25 stitches to close up a nasty wound behind his ear, though Roberts was only dismissed after VAR intervened and referred Oliver to the pitchside monitor.
