Liverpool’s journey in the Champions League under their new manager, Arne Slot, continues to gather momentum as they secured a 2-0 victory over Bologna at Anfield. The Reds’ goals, courtesy of Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah, gave Slot his first European home win since taking the reins. This match was not without its challenges, as Bologna’s spirited performance forced Liverpool to work hard for the win, but Slot’s men ultimately delivered in front of a roaring Anfield crowd.
Liverpool wasted no time in asserting their dominance, with Alexis Mac Allister finding the back of the net just 12 minutes into the game. His goal came from a low cross delivered with precision by Mohamed Salah from the right wing, leaving the Bologna defence helpless. The goal was a moment of quality that set the tone for the match, although the Italian side, in their first Champions League campaign, were not to be dismissed so easily.
Both teams had further chances to score, only for the linesman’s flag to intervene. Bologna’s Thijs Dallinga had a goal ruled out for offside, while Darwin Nunez found himself in a similar situation for Liverpool. Bologna then rallied towards the end of the first half, creating several tense moments for the Liverpool backline. Dan Ndoye came close to levelling the score, rattling the post after a mix-up in Liverpool’s defence. Trent Alexander-Arnold’s error also handed the Italians a chance, but Alisson was quick to deny Kacper Urbanski.
As the second half kicked off, Bologna continued to threaten, pressing hard for an equaliser. Their attacking play caused problems for the Liverpool defence, with Alisson being called into action once again. The Brazilian goalkeeper was forced to save from Riccardo Orsolini, while Urbanski missed a golden opportunity, firing over the crossbar when he was in a great position to score.
Despite these scares, Liverpool’s defence held firm. Bologna may have been considered the underdogs, but their performance was far from timid, as they sought to make their mark in their debut Champions League campaign. However, the Reds, buoyed by the Anfield atmosphere, stood their ground and maintained their composure.
Just as the pressure from Bologna began to mount, Mohamed Salah produced another moment of brilliance to secure the three points for Liverpool. With his trademark move, Salah cut inside onto his left foot and unleashed a stunning shot that curled into the top corner of the net. This goal, Salah’s 49th in the Champions League, not only sealed the victory but also showcased why he remains one of Europe’s most feared forwards.
Salah’s goal eased the tension inside Anfield and ensured that Slot’s impressive start to life at Liverpool continued. Since taking over from Jurgen Klopp in the summer, Slot has guided the Reds to eight wins in nine matches, a record that few managers can boast of in their early days at the club.
Liverpool’s 2-0 win against Bologna leaves them in a commanding position in their Champions League group, having won both of their opening fixtures. Their previous victory, a 3-1 win away at AC Milan, further demonstrates the strength of the squad under Slot’s guidance. With six points from six, Liverpool are firmly on track to secure a spot in the last 16 of the competition.
However, tougher challenges lie ahead. The Reds still face group matches against German champions Bayer Leverkusen, led by former Liverpool star Xabi Alonso, and 15-time European champions Real Madrid. Despite these upcoming tests, Slot’s side will take confidence from their early success, knowing they have the quality to compete at the highest level.
Liverpool’s domestic form has been equally impressive. Sitting at the top of the Premier League, they are poised to contend on all fronts this season. Slot’s ability to maintain momentum both in Europe and in the league will be crucial as they navigate the gruelling fixture schedule.
While Liverpool walked away with the victory, Bologna can hold their heads high. The Serie A side, under new manager Vincenzo Italiano, who previously managed Fiorentina, displayed a level of grit and determination that should serve them well as they continue their Champions League journey. This is only Bologna’s second appearance in Europe’s top competition, and their performance at Anfield will give them confidence as they prepare to face Aston Villa in the Europa League on 23 October.
Although they lost key players such as Joshua Zirkzee and Riccardo Calafiori in the summer, Bologna’s fifth-place finish in Serie A last season shows their potential. The Anfield defeat will sting, but Italiano’s side can take plenty of positives from their performance against one of Europe’s elite teams.
Liverpool’s next Champions League fixture sees them travel to Germany to face RB Leipzig. Slot will hope his team can continue their strong start and further cement their place in the competition’s knockout stages.
