Sometimes moving forward could also mean taking a step back, two take two steps forward.

Against Crystal Palace in the League Cup on Wednesday night, Slot has an opportunity for experimentation.

With big games coming up in the Premier League and the Champions League in the next few days this is not going to be a game of huge importance.

Thus it's going to be an opportunity for Slot to trial some of his players on the fringes and see how they do and whether they could be a solution to the club's current problems.

Among those players could be a right-back who last made an appearance for Liverpool in almost three years but who is extremely highly regarded.

Calvin Ramsay was once dubbed as a special talent. When Liverpool signed him from Aberdeen he was the closest thing to Trent Alexander-Arnold on the market.

And he showed that in his first start for the club against Derby County in the League Cup back in 2022.

That night against Derby, Ramsay recorded a whopping 107 passes from 114 attempted, with 19 passes into the final third, and six into the penalty area, while completing two out of his three dribbles and also winning two out of his three defensive duels.

It was supposed to be a moment of breakthrough for the youngster but what has transpired is a horrid three year spell for Ramsay.

He's been riddled with injuries and has struggled to regain his form when sent out on loan.

Only now having returned to Liverpool and playing regularly for the U21s has he found a semblance of form and has caught the eye with his performances.

As a result, he's expected to be involved against Palace, potentially even earning a start in this one. And if he puts in a good performance, you just never know, it could be the beginning of a spectacular redemption arc.
