Liverpool’s dramatic 3-2 win over Atletico Madrid may have been decided by a last-minute header from Virgil van Dijk, but the night belonged to Alexander Isak. Making his Liverpool debut, the Swedish striker offered a glimpse of why Arne Slot pushed so hard for his signing and why expectations are high ahead of Saturday’s clash with Everton.
Slot was quick to highlight the significance of Isak’s first outing. “I was positively surprised by how fit he was during that 60 minutes… he has so many games under his belt that he is probably more able to be ready for 60.”
The Liverpool manager admitted that while he expected quality, the sharpness was striking. “I wasn’t surprised by his quality because that’s what we all know. You don’t have to be a manager to recognise how much quality he has. But it’s always nice to see if a player starts the way he starts.”
Isak will not be rushed into a full match. Slot confirmed: “I can tell you he is not going to play 90 again on Saturday.” The plan appears to be a gradual build-up of minutes to ensure the striker is fully integrated before the season’s crucial winter period.
Everton offer a different kind of test, with intensity and physicality always defining the Merseyside derby. Slot knows this is not the fixture to gamble with player fitness.
The early signs suggest that Isak will become the focal point of Liverpool’s attack. His link-up play, movement and close control stood out against Atletico, with Slot pointing to his ability to adapt quickly despite limited training time.

With Florian Wirtz and Mohamed Salah combining around him, Liverpool look more balanced going forward. The potential for growth is huge, and supporters will expect to see more of Isak’s influence as the team heads into a busy schedule.
Liverpool have made a habit of late winners under Slot, but the Everton clash will be a chance to assert control earlier. If Isak can deliver again, even in limited minutes, he could turn his debut week into a defining moment of the season.
