Liverpool’s recent 2-2 draw with Fulham has reignited the debate over who should lead the line for the Reds. With Diogo Jota back in action and Darwin Nunez struggling for form, manager Arne Slot faces a tough decision on his hands.
Diogo Jota, absent from the pitch for two months, wasted no time reminding everyone of his prowess as a finisher. His goal against Fulham, a masterclass in both movement and execution, came just at the right moment, pulling Liverpool back from the brink of defeat. Jota’s knack for being in the right place at the right time and his calmness in front of goal are exactly what Liverpool has been missing.

On the other hand, Darwin Nunez has had a plethora of chances to cement his place as a regular starter during Jota’s absence. Unfortunately, his performances have been marked by inconsistency, making it hard for him to make a compelling case. His approach is different, often taking shots from less advantageous positions, which is reflected in a lower expected goals (xG) tally compared to Jota’s.
When comparing the two, it’s clear that Jota is a more efficient striker. He makes the most of his opportunities, finding space and maintaining composure under pressure. His ability to consistently position himself well within the box is a significant advantage, as seen in his recent performances. Nunez, with his penchant for dramatic sprints and long-range efforts, offers a different kind of threat, but his finishing has been less reliable.

Arne Slot might now consider leaning more towards Jota as his primary striker, especially in high-stakes matches. Nunez might find more opportunities in matches where the pressure isn’t as intense, allowing him to play without the burden of immediate expectations.
“For me, he has an impact,” Slot commented on Nunez. “If you only look at goals, he hasn’t scored as many as he wants to score or we want a No 9 to score, but he does have impact in his work rate and that’s not just to prevent the other team from making a chance, but also for us when we lose the ball to be aggressive and we can get the ball back and create chances.”
While Jota seems to be the more reliable option at the moment, the dynamics could change as the season progresses. Both players offer different qualities that can be beneficial depending on the game scenario. Slot’s choice will likely reflect not just a preference for goals but also strategic considerations about pressing and possession play.
As Liverpool continues to navigate the complexities of a highly competitive Premier League season, the roles of Jota and Nunez will be crucial. Whether leading the line or coming off the bench, their contributions could very well determine the extent of Liverpool’s success this year.
