Arne Slot has now met with ‘outstanding’ star about Liverpool transfer

One thing that has been made clear about Liverpool this season is that they still need to improve their first-team squad.

Although Richard Hughes and Arne Slot spent around £450 million on new arrivals in the summer, it's clearly not enough for them to keep up with their rivals.

Indeed, a lot of Liverpool's bad form is down to the lack of vision that Slot has had for his team this season, however, due to the sheer amount of quality that the Anfield outfit have among their ranks at the moment, they should be able to beat the likes of Galatasary with ease.

That has clearly not been the case which is why it's hardly surprising to hear that Slot has already started to meet with new players ahead of the summer window.

One of the main areas that Liverpool need to upgrade next season is their defence.

Although some players such as Virgil van Dijk and Milos Kerkez are finally finding their feet in Slot's new system, others such as Ibrahima Konate are still performing well below their usual standards.

This has caused many rumours to emerge from L4 with a new report emerging which suggests that Slot has already met with Nico Schlotterbeck ahead of the summer transfer window.

"Schlotterbeck update," journalist Jorge C Picon wrote via his personal X account.

"Borussia Dortmund has presented him with a very good offer to renew his contract (which ends in 2027) and they're regaining hope that he'll stay with the club.

"Real Madrid is following the German's trail, who they like a lot. He's among the options to bolster the centre of the defence depending on the departures this summer.

"The other club that wants him is Liverpool. Arne Slot even met with him to tell him about the project and try to convince him."

Nico Schlotterbeck would be an exceptional signing for Liverpool

Although Real Madrid may be vying for the German's transfer, the fact that Liverpool can offer him a guaranteed spot at the heart of their defence for the next few years is likely to be a major selling point for the club.

Indeed, Konate and Van Dijk are Slot's two starting centre-backs at the moment but, since the Frenchman hasn't extended his stay just yet, it doesn't feel like the former RB Leipzig man has much of a future at L4.

Others such as Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet will also be waiting for their chance to shine but, since both of them are fairly young and haven't ever played consistent Premier League football, it's going to take a while for them to adjust.

Schlotterbeck is only 26 years old so he still has plenty of years left at the top level and, the fact that Julian Naglesmann has described him as an "outstanding player" proves how good he actually is.

He can also be used as a centre-back or a left-back and, with Andy Robertson likely to leave Liverpool at the end of the 2025-26 season, that void will need to be filled.

The defender's Champions League and Bundesliga experience also sets him apart from the other defenders that Liverpool have been linked with which is another massive selling point.

And, since his contract is going to expire in June 2027, there's never been a better time for a club to sign the German, especially if they want to get him for a cut-rate price.

Here's hoping that Slot and Hughes have what it takes to entice the Germany international to take the leap and join Liverpool.
