Arne Slot has suggested that Liverpool will not be busy in the January transfer window as he is satisfied with the squad at his disposal.

The Reds splashed out a record £446 million in the summer, the most ever spent by a Premier League club in a single window.

Despite this, the Merseyside outfit struggled for form for a long stretch of the first half of the campaign. Although they have recovered and returned to the top four, they look certain to relinquish their title to Arsenal this season.

Liverpool are also currently dealing with injuries to key players, such as Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike, while Mo Salah is away at the Africa Cup of Nations. But Slot insists that he and the club’s hierarchy do not need to make new signings this month.

“First of all, I am happy with the squad we have, it is in line with me, [sporting director] Richard Hughes and the ownership,” the Dutchman said ahead of Thursday’s clash with Arsenal.

“This group is talented if everyone is available, nothing positive from injuries, but maybe if I could think about the narrative that is always there that we spent so much in the summer.

“No, we replaced and spent a bit more than came in. No one wanted to hear it, but maybe now for the first time people do see that we have replaced with very good players.

“So even the last game and the one before I could impact off the bench, [Jeremie] Frimpong with an assist and the starters are incredible football players, so this club is in a very good place if everyone is available in the short future and mid-to-long-term future.”

One area that Liverpool could potentially improve the team is in defence, where they are light on numbers. Marc Guehi is expected to be a summer target for the club after missing out on his signature on deadline day last September, although they may have to move for him in January as Manchester City are reportedly considering making a bid this month.

Slot, though, would not entertain questions about the centre-back in his pre-match press conference. “Vinny [O’Connor] always asks about transfers! He knows I don’t speak about transfers in public, let alone talk about players from another club. There’s no use asking me that question because we don’t talk about players who are not ours.”

Meanwhile, Slot confirmed that Liverpool cannot recall Harvey Elliott from his loan at Aston Villa. Unai Emery confirmed that Villa have no intention of signing the playmaker permanently, which is why has only made one start in the Premier League since his summer move.

“If you want to ask about a Villa player, ask Unai Emery. Liverpool has no recall option,” Slot said.
