The 22-year-old has now missed the last two matches after being forced to withdraw from the starting XI in the win over Nottingham Forest last weekend due to not feeling 100 per cent in the warm-up.

It has been confirmed that the Germany international is dealing with a back issue.

Though while thought to not be too serious, Wirtz is unlikely to recover in time for Liverpool’s next fixture which is away at the Premier League’s bottom team Wolves on Tuesday night.

Speaking after the win over West Ham, the Liverpool boss said: “I think that [Tuesday’s game] will be too early.

“But I said last week I didn’t expect him not to be available for today, so sometimes things can develop in a positive or negative way in an injury, now we are thinking it doesn’t have to be too long, but Tuesday will probably be too early.

“The week after will be tight as things stand now.”

Liverpool face Wolves twice away from home next week as Tuesday’s Premier League clash will be followed by an FA Cup fifth round showdown on Friday night.

Alexis Mac Allister added a third before the break before Cody Gakpo and an Axel Disasi own goal in the second half kept West Ham at arm’s length and ensured Liverpool made it four wins in a row across all competitions.
