Arne Slot says Hugo Ekitike’s injury is quite serious after the Liverpool striker was carried off on a stretcher during the Champions League quarter-final second leg defeat to PSG, which finished 0-2.

Ekitike went down in the 28th minute after planting his foot, immediately clutching the back of his right ankle and unable to stand despite several attempts. According to L'Équipe, Slot said the striker had hurt himself badly.

The Liverpool manager said he could not offer further details and did not know whether the France international would play again this season. He added that the forward left the field in tears.

The setback comes with the World Cup due from 11 June to 19 July, now less than two months away.

Team-mate Ibrahima Konaté said the situation felt very difficult for Ekitike with the tournament approaching and sent his support.
