Flamengo captain Arrascaeta has revealed he had the chance to join Barcelona B on loan early in his career, while starring for Uruguay’s under-20s, but the move did not progress.

“When I was playing for Uruguay under-20s, we reached the Under-20 World Cup final but lost to France. When I returned home I had the possibility to go to Barcelona, Barcelona B I think, on loan, but my agent felt it was not the best for me then because I was not yet in the first team,” he said. He was speaking to PodBoa.

“And that was that,” he added. “Obviously I was very excited when they said Barcelona, but it was a loan and I do not know if it suited the club or anyone. Later I was sounded out by some clubs, but I never had, let’s say, a strong offer.”

Flamengo signed him in January 2019, then the biggest deal in the club’s history, paying about 15 million euros, R$ 64 million at the time, to Cruzeiro.

Alongside Bruno Henrique, he is the most decorated player in Flamengo’s history with 18 trophies, including three Libertadores, three Brasileiros and two Copas do Brasil.

He has played 388 games for the club, scoring 106 goals with 119 assists, and is under contract until December 2028.

With Arrascaeta available, Flamengo face Corinthians on Sunday 13th in round 27 of the Brasileirão at the Maracanã, kick-off 17:30 Brasília time.
