Arsenal have taken a significant step towards defending their UEFA Women’s Champions League title after a commanding 3-1 victory over Chelsea at Emirates Stadium in the first leg of the quarter-finals.
Stina Blackstenius opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, heading home a pinpoint free-kick from Katie McCabe, before Chloe Kelly doubled the advantage with a curling effort from outside the box.
Chelsea threatened early on, hitting the woodwork twice through Alyssa Thompson and Lauren James, and James later pulled one back with a superb lob in the 66th minute.
Alessia Russo sealed the win for Arsenal in the 77th minute, finishing a slick move that left Sonia Bompastor's side little hope of a comeback.
The result leaves Arsenal in a strong position, able to progress from the second leg at Stamford Bridge with a one-goal defeat.
Arsenal, led by Renée Slegers, demonstrated their efficiency and composure, combining clinical finishing with disciplined defence, and continue to build momentum as they aim to retain their European crown.
